The Smoaks began their missionary work as AIMers in Kenya in 1986. Since receiving full appointment to Tanzania in 1988, they have been actively involved in various evangelism initiatives, church planting, and developing leaders. They have also been providing Bible school instruction, with a focus on training Tanzanian pastors to teach and manage the three Bible schools. Sister Smoak coordinates the translation of materials into the language of Swahili. Brother Smoak is an advisor to the national boards of both Tanzania and Burundi. This last term saw the Tanzanian church nationalized with an elected national superintendent. Brother Smoak was appointed as the Area Coordinator for the seventeen nations of East Africa in 2016. Returning to the field, the Smoaks will continue advising and encouraging the leadership of both countries and the long-term advancement of all the Bible schools, as well as continuing literature translation.
